Lead 21 – Literacy: Unit theme “What makes me special?”  This week we focused on the question, “What are my feelings?”
Science: The kindergarten students will be starting a new science unit next week.  It is entitled Helping Students Protect the Environment and Live Well.  Throughout this unit the students will be learning that everything comes from the earth.  They will learn about natural resources and the products that are made from those resources.  The students will also learn about repurposing items. We are asking each child to bring in a large adult t-shirt that can be cut up and made into a cloth bag.  Please send the t-shirts by Wednesday, September 24th. The students will be using the repurposed bags to keep their resting towels in at school. Our classes will also be creating a “Dump Library” to be maintained in our classrooms.  If you have any old books you would be able to donate to our classroom, we would appreciate them.
Math: Math skills we worked on this week included sorting, counting and recognizing numbers 1 to 10, and comparing body heights to objects in the classroom.
Writing: We read a story about a child named Titch. The children learned how to discuss the book with a partner and generate writing topics.  They then wrote about things they liked to do with their own families.
Dot Day: International dot day is celebrated on Sept. 15th each year. On Monday, we read the book The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds.  The children created colorful dots of their own that are on display in the hall.

It has been a great week in Kindergarten.  The children are learning new routines and are doing a great job of showing “Cadet Pride”.  The children were so excited to see their friends from preschool as well as to make many new friends!

Cadet Nation Fridays - Sept. 5th is the first Friday of the month and is time for our students to show their “Cadet Pride“ by wearing their Cadet Nation t-shirts given to them last year or a Cadet blue t-shirt.  Throughout the school year the first Friday of the month will be Cadet Nation Day.

This week we worked on the letter sounds “s, a, t, i, and p” in our Jolly Phonics books.  Please review these sounds and songs with your child.

The children watched the “Yellow Troll” Wednesday and learned how to maintain their self-control.  They say the following rhyme to themselves to gain their self-control: stop 2, 3 – breathe 2, 3 – use my self-control. Throughout the week it has been very helpful for the children to recite this rhyme.
