Literacy: We read the book Roses Are Pink, Your Feet Really Stink by Diane de Groat.   The children focused on strategies that good readers use when they read.  The focus strategy this week was identifying the problem in the story for the characters and the solution.   Gilbert wanted to make Valentines for his friends.  He was upset with two children in his class and made them mean cards.  So after Gilbert told the others why he was upset, everyone apologized.  In the end, Gilbert made new cards that were nice for them.

Math: This week the children were very busy during math time. They learned how to divide a whole object into halves equally, how to read and make a map.  The high point of the week was playing the Money Cube Game.  It was a great game that helped the children review the names and values of coins.

Writing: The children continued to learn about nonfiction books. We read the story I Like Pasta by Jennifer Julius.  They then generated a list of foods we could write about in class.  Next the children were provided the opportunity to examine grapes and raisins.  They used their senses to generate facts about grapes and raisins to create a two- page book.

Literacy: We read the book Hooway For Wodney Wat  by Helen Lester.   The children focused on retelling the story including key ideas and details. Rodney Rat wanted to fit in.  He wanted to be like his classmates.  Rodney couldn’t pronounce his R’s and it made him talk funny.  His friends made fun of him.  Then, he saved the day when Camilla walked away west.  Please ask your child to retell this story by asking what happened in the beginning, middle, and end. They can wear their Wodney Wat headband while they retell the story. The children will enjoy sharing this story with their families!
Math: This week the children learned how to skip count by 2s, 3s, and 5s with calculators.  They discovered it was a much faster way to skip count.
Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
Check out the Leprechaun traps the children made in class after listening to the story Clever Tom and the Leprechaun  by Linda Shute!
