Jolly Phonics: This week we worked on the letter sounds “sh, th, and qu ” in our Jolly Phonics books.  Please review these sounds and songs with your child. 

Literacy: We read the book Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse by Kevin Henkes.  The children focused on strategies that good readers use when they read.  The strategies focused on this week included predicting, retelling details, and inferring to make connections to understand the story.

Meals from the Heartland: We participated in the meal packaging event Thursday in the Jr. High gym.  The children had a great time filling, sealing, and packaging the bags of food!

   The children will not be dressing up in costumes this year.  Please do not send costumes to school with your child. The students will be rotating through fun stations during the party.

Nov. 4 – No School

Jolly Phonics: This week we worked on the letter sounds “oo, y, x, and ch ” in our Jolly Phonics books.  Please review these sounds and songs with your child. 
Literacy: We read the book Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes.  The children focused on strategies that good readers use when they read.  The strategies focused on this week include predicting, retelling details,  and inferring to make connections to understand the story.
Math: In math this week we focused on counting and recognizing teen numbers.  We used shaving cream to practice writing numbers. It was messy, but a lot of fun!
Thank you Cresco Fire Department! The children enjoyed their visit on Tuesday from Mr. Murray. They loved exploring the Fire Truck!
Sharing: We are working hard on identifying words that rhyme. Please have your child bring in two items that rhyme for sharing next week.

         Oct. 18      Wild About Character Counts!  Get your jungle tiger on! Please come dressed in wild prints, animal logos, clothing that gives you jungle fever! No place in the wild to hide that Cadet Pride! 
         Oct. 19      Citizenship Day at Howard-Winn!  Come dressed in USA themed clothing.  Stars, stripes, red, white, and blue!
         Oct. 20       Pursue your Passion!  Come dressed in your future career!  Rise to the occasion and share your career pathway choice during Character Counts Week.
Oct. 21 Give me a “T” for Trustworthy and an “R” for Responsible! Show your school spirit by wearing your Cadet Blue!  True Blue for Trustworthiness, and being Responsible for showing Cadet Pride!

Character Counts Citizenship Project for 2016:  Please help your students donate non-perishable food items during Character Counts Week to help support Howard-Winneshiek families throughout the winter season.

Jolly Phonics: This week we worked on the letter sounds “z, w, ng,  and v ” in our Jolly Phonics books.  Please review these sounds and songs with your child. 
Literacy: Nursery Rhymes The children have been enjoying reciting various nursery rhymes this week.  Nursery Rhymes help to develop language patterns when the children sing and recite them.  Ask your child to recite their favorite rhyme.
Writing: The book City Signs was read and discussed with the class.  The children then drew and labeled pictures of their favorite place to hang out. The children then shared their pictures with a partner.
