Lead 21 –Literacy:   
 Unit Assessment week – The students were given the Unit 2 Assessment this week.
Science: We have been talking about hibernation this week.  Angela Breis Howard County Naturalist presented “Animals in Winter”.  The children learned the three ways animals survive the winter months.  The animals migrate, adapt, or hibernate.
Math: This week we worked on one to one correspondence with the numbers 1 to 10.  The students created counting books.
Handwriting: We worked on writing the lower case letters r, n,   and m.
Writing: We read the story titled I Went Walking  by Sue Williams. The children discussed how authors observe the world and then write about what they notice. As a class the children generated a list of things they observed just in our classroom.  From the list the students then created their own stories.
The words I, see, the, and a were displayed on to the word wall in our classroom. The students were be able use the word wall as a reference when they wrote their stories.
Jolly Phonics: Please continue to review letter sounds at home. Thank you for working with your child on sound books and word lists found in the Jolly Phonics Envelopes.

Lead 21 –Literacy: Around Me Unit theme “What can I find out about the world around me?”  This week we focused on the question, “How can I use my senses to observe science?”

Science: We have been talking about Honeybees and Spiders.

Math: In math this week we talked about “Symmetry in Nature”.  We made leaf rubbings so we could see how both sides are exactly the same.

Handwriting: We worked on writing the lower case letters h, k and i.  The children reviewed how to write the letters f, b, and l.

Writing: We read the story titled I Love My Hair by Natasha Tarpley. We then drew and labeled pictures of ourselves and identified what we love about our bodies. The pictures were then shared with the class.

Important Dates:  
Oct. 29 – Report Cards sent home
Oct. 31  - KB Halloween/Fall Party 2:25 to 3:10
The children will not be dressing up in costumes this year.  Please do not send costumes to school with your child. The students will be rotating through fun stations during the party.

Jolly Phonics: This week we worked on the letter sounds “ou, oi, ue, er, and ar ” in our Jolly Phonics books.  Please review these sounds and songs with your child. 
Lead 21 –Literacy: Around Me Unit theme “What can I find out about the world around me?”  This week we focused on the question, “How can I use my senses to describe things?”
Science: We have been talking about the season of Fall. We are able to use our five senses to experience this exciting season.
Math: In math this week we focused on counting and recognizing teen numbers.  We used shaving cream to practice writing numbers. It was messy, but a lot of fun!
Handwriting: We worked on writing the lower case letters f, b, l, and t.
Writing: We read the story titled Round Is a Mooncake: A Book of Shapes. We then independently drew and labeled four objects of a specific shape.

Jolly Phonics: This week we worked on the letter sounds “x, ch, sh, th, and qu ” in our Jolly Phonics books.  Please review these sounds and songs with your child. 

Social Studies: Fire Prevention Week – Visit from the Cresco Fire Department.  Coloring contest papers are due Monday.

Math: In math this week we focused on counting backwards from 10. We learned how to play the “Countdown Game”.

Handwriting: We worked on writing the lower case letters c, e, and s.  The letters a, d, o, and g were also reviewed.

Writing: We read the story titled Red is a Dragon: A Book of Colors. Then everyone independently drew and labeled four objects of a specific color. The pictures were then shared with a friend.

Jolly Phonics: This week we worked on the letter sounds “w, ng, z, oo, and y ” in our Jolly Phonics books.  Please review these sounds and songs with your child.

         Lead 21 –Literacy: Unit theme “What makes me special?”  This week we focused on the question, “How can I share who I am with others?”

Math: In math we focused on identifying shapes. We did various activities that involved exploring and recognizing circles, triangles, squares, and rectangles.

Handwriting: The children worked on writing the lower case letters  a, d, o ,and g.

Writing: The book City Signs was read and discussed with the class Monday.  The children then drew and labeled pictures of their favorite place to hang out. The children then shared their pictures with a partner.

Wear a blue shirt to school.
