Literacy: We read the book Snowmen at Night by Caralyn Buehner .   The children focused on strategies that good readers use when they read.  The focus strategy this week was retelling details. The children worked with partners to identify important details and retell the story. They really enjoyed sharing information about the story using picture cards.
*Attached are Jolly Phonics Tricky Words that the students are learning to read and use when they write sentences.  The children may keep this list to use at home.
Math: How Big Is A Foot?”   The children found out why it is important to have a standard unit of measure.  They compared their cut out foot to an actual foot sized foot. They soon discovered that there is a big difference in size and measurement.
Valentine’s Day: Valentine’s Day is fast approaching.  We will be having our Valentine’s party on Tuesday, Feb. 14th from 12:30 to 1:30p.m. Your child may bring Valentine’s for his/her classmates.  If your child is showing an interest in reading and writing his/her classmates name, please help him/her print them on each envelope (see list below). If not, please leave the envelopes blank, but sign the cards.  Your child will pass Valentine’s to every child in the room.  Please write on all of the envelopes or none of them.  Thank you!

Math: This week the children had fun tracing their feet and measuring different things in the classroom. They worked with partners to measure.  One person moved the foot cut out and the other counted the steps.

It would be beneficial for the students to be well rested and have a nutritious breakfast all that week. The FAST results will be shared during conferences with parents.

Happy New Year!

Writing:  We read the story titled Feelings by Susan Canizares. We then composed a class story about feelings. The children discussed different feelings and shared stories.
Please have the children practice writing sentences that go along with their pictures they create at home.  Remind them to use their Jolly Phonics sound sheet when sounding out words.  We have been working on starting a sentence with a capital letter, leaving two finger spaces between words, and using punctuation to stop a sentence.

Math: This week the children learned about the passage of time and order of events. Each child made a sequencing time line of daily events.  They drew pictures of what they did in the morning, afternoon, and at night.

Science: We read many books about snow this week. They completed snow related activities. The snow projects are displayed in the hall.
